I signed up to an account on the mastodon.social server using the federated FOSS microblogging/twitter style service Mastodon a few years ago. I liked the look of it and the idea that it was free and servers could be based around different topics/groups etc, but like many such services I knew no-one on it and as such put it to one side thinking it would probably fade away or become a dull hangout for hardcore nerds and misanthropes.
Witterings
General off-the-cuff and not very well thought out diatribes on different topics of varying importance.
Levinson, Link and their killer cyborg
Richard Levinson and William Link are well known for gifting the wonderful character of Lieutenant Colombo to the world. In the 1980s they also gave us touring author and elderly herald of death, Jessica Fletcher in the popular TV show Murder She Wrote. However what you may not know is that a year or two prior they also wrote the script for the TV sci-fi movie Prototype.

Great.
Now I know what your first car was.
I also know, from your Facebook profile, what your full name is (thanks Facebook and your real name policy) where you live, (if you’ve entered it, which you probably have) who you work for and who your family members are. Some of you even have your phone number listed.
If you are female and married, I probably also know what you maiden name is if you’ve listed your mother as a family member (which you have). I also may know who your favourite bands are and where you were born. What school you went to, what university, what shops you like, what websites you go to.
Scared yet? No?
The Importance of Storing Metadata in the Digital-only Age
As a metadata nerd I’ve been a long time Musicbrainz user. Last night I was trying to tidy up the Severed Heads releases and realised that a lot of the original online references have gone. Sure, the basic facts about many releases are stored by fans on the likes of MusicBrainz.org or Discogs.com, but not everything. Nuances and original intent can be lost.
The Death of the High Street
Today we closed the shop, permanently. We shut the doors early at 16:30 so we could parcel up the remaining stock for shipment to surviving stores. I’m now out of work again, with the more long term staff struggling to get placements within the company.
My top ten favourite cult movies I haven’t seen.
Of all the great movies that have been made, this is my favourite list of top classic/cult movies I’ve never got around to watching, but will have an opinion on regardless otherwise people will insist I watch them and I honestly can’t be bothered.
No hlp for Win 8
I must apologise in advance as this may contain some nerd rage.
Night of the Meme Vampires
Am I the only person who gets annoyed at others re-posting “funny” pictures online without attributing the original creator?
Choosing a GF friendly Linux for netbooks
My SO’s netbook is choking. I’m hoping it’s just caused by a flakey and poorly maintained Ubuntu install and not the symptoms of a netbook on its last legs.
While she’s back home for a week in .fi I have a chance to reinstall the OS. I thought I’d take the opportunity to install a more netbook friendly flavour of Linux.
